28 years. One consistent belief: understanding changes everything.
Dr Maria-Elena Lukeides | Clinical Psychologist · Sydney & Online
I came to psychology the way most people do — because I needed to understand something. About myself, about the people I loved, about why we do the things we do even when they hurt us.
That curiosity never left. Twenty-eight years later, it’s still what gets me into the consulting room every morning.
In my clinical practice, that same curiosity drives how I support people navigating the complexities of their mental health and wellbeing. Everyone who walks through my door is carrying some kind of pain. And while that pain is real and needs to be addressed, it’s rarely the whole story.
Underneath the anxiety, the low mood, the relationship patterns, the exhaustion — there’s almost always something deeper. A belief about yourself that’s been running quietly in the background for decades. A story about the world, about what you deserve, about what’s safe — that made complete sense once, and is quietly running your life now.
So I work on two tracks simultaneously.
The Present.
The first track addresses how pain shows up in the present — in your body, your thoughts, your daily life. I give you real tools and skills drawn from evidence-based approaches — something concrete to take away from sessions.
The Roots.
The second track goes to the root causes beneath the symptoms — the beliefs, the schemas, the experiences from years ago that are still shaping how you feel and how you move through the world. That’s where the deeper change becomes possible.
My approach is warm, direct, and grounded in 28 years of clinical experience. I take the whole person seriously — not just the symptoms, but the body, the health, the life. Healing isn’t just psychological. It’s physical, relational, and deeply personal.
The consulting room is where I do some of my most important work. But it has always felt like one room in a much larger house.
Retreats, Speaking, and the Science of Human Potential
Retreats came first — not as a business decision, but as a calling. There is a quality of transformation available in an immersive setting that weekly therapy simply cannot replicate. Away from the structures and demands of ordinary life, in a beautiful place, with time and space and intention — something becomes possible that doesn’t happen on a Tuesday at 3pm. In retreat, I get to work in the way that feels most fully like me: integrating breathwork, sound healing, energy work, and the intuitive, mystical dimensions of this practice that don’t fit neatly into a clinical model. This is where I truly feel most myself in my work.
The speaking came later — and it came from my patients. So many of them, over the years, asked me to come and talk to their teams, their organisations, their leadership groups. They kept saying: ‘the way you explain this is different. It actually lands.’ I discovered I have a genuine talent for taking the highest levels of neuroscience, psychology, and ancient wisdom and distilling them into something that a room full of busy, sceptical, brilliant people can immediately use. I’m told I’m funny. I’m warm. And apparently I make the science feel like something that was always obvious — you just needed someone to say it the right way.
All of it — the therapy, the retreats, the speaking, the courses — comes from the same place. A lifelong fascination with why we suffer, what gets in the way of change, and what becomes

Informed By
My work draws on a multidisciplinary intellectual framework that goes beyond formal therapeutic modalities — including evolutionary psychology, neuroaffective neuroscience, psychodynamic and Gestalt theories, and Jungian psychology. Alongside these, I draw on the psychological aspects of ancient wisdom traditions — from Greek philosophy and Stoicism to Buddhism and Hinduism. As a spiritual teacher for over a decade, these traditions are not separate from my clinical work. They are woven through it.
Speaking & Media
Keynote speaker and workshop facilitator for organisations including Morgan Stanley, Prospa, and Navitas.
Featured across Vogue Australia, Mamamia, Marie Claire, Body+Soul, Women’s Health, and more than a dozen other national publications and podcasts.
Whole Person Health
Psychological healing doesn’t happen in isolation from the body. The relationship between how we move, what we eat, how we rest, and how we feel is not incidental — it is central. I bring a genuine and informed interest in health, diet, and exercise into my work, because lasting change requires attending to the whole person, not just the presenting symptoms.
And then there’s Jasper.
He’s been coming to work with me since he was eight weeks old. He has an extraordinary instinct for knowing when someone needs company and when they need space — which, honestly, is more than can be said for most humans.
Fair warning: he is frequently voted the favourite therapist in the room.
If dogs aren’t your thing, I’m probably not your therapist. If they are, he’ll likely become one of the highlights of your week.
